The Opportunity: 

Our client engineers and manufacturers custom and off-the-shelf converters for the satellite communications industry. Founded in 2003, the company has risen to success by engineering proven products for satellite systems and next generation earth terminals. Their converters form critical components of systems for High Throughput Satellites, communications on the move, earth observation, military, remote worksite communications and telecommunications backhaul.

This stable, profitable company is poised for significant growth, and they are seeking a Director of Engineering to untie the CEO’s hands so he can steer the company towards a successful outcome.

About the Role:

The Director of Manufacturing Engineering oversees management of the research and development division of the company. In conjunction with the CEO, s/he will identify, develop and execute the strategy for both new and existing products within the organization. S/he will develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of direct and indirect competing technologies and track their relationships. The Director of Engineering will drive the designs through to manufactuing readiness, in collaboration with the Director of Operations.

You are an experienced leader in RF electronics manufacturing, with skills in market trend identification, product development, and commercial deployment, and excellent leadership skills to pull it all together.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to the engineering team:

    • Process design and optimization

    • Strategic framework design and implementation for optimization, test plans, and data collection

    • Core data analysis

    • Team building, communication, decision making

    • Establishment of key partner relationships

    • Project management – cost, resources, & fulfilment/schedule management

    • Optimization of procurement

  • Organizational Development

    • Lead R&D capabilities and activities that will ensure organization maintains and grows market position in their space

    • Working closely with CEO, develop comprehensive strategy to identify & explore next generation technologies

    • Build out a world class team with high retention and energy

    • Develop and implement an appropriate IP strategy around the company’s current and future technology platforms

  • Commercial Deployment

    • Lead the development of internal and external capabilities

    • Determine appropriate strategies to maintain and improve skillset of core engineering design services

Experience & Qualifications:

  • BEng in Electrical Engineering

  • Previous experience in RF design

  • 10+ years in a leadership role in an electronic design facility

  • In-depth knowledge of the engineering, materials, and quality functions

  • Experience in a small/medium sized organization during growth phase.

  • Exceptional internal and external communication and motivational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work activities for self and your team, and allocate scarce resources.

  • High performing engineer with ability to synthesize complex information and concepts into a coherent plan

  • Highly effective at design of experiment to maximize outputs

  • Possess strong hands-on skills in an industrial engineering environment

  • Problem-solving personality - can solve even the toughest and most complex of problems

  • Skilled at getting individuals and teams to perform at a higher level and to embrace change:

    • negotiates skillfully to achieve a fair outcome or promote a common cause

    • communicates a compelling vision and is committed to what needs to be done

    • inspires others; builds motivated, high-performing teams; understands what motivates different personality types
